The Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen) decided to close its case against the Swedish Postcode Association. The case began after concerns about telephone sales of lottery tickets. The Swedish Consumer Agency flagged the issue, then referred it to the Consumer Ombudsman (KO).

Right now, the regulator is not taking action. However, Spelinspektionen explained that this decision does not mean the association followed the law correctly. If KO proves a breach of the Marketing Act or fresh facts come to light, the regulator will reopen the case.

Consumer Ombudsman’s Next Move

The Consumer Ombudsman may still move the case to court. If that happens, Swedish law on lottery marketing will become clearer. Critics argue that phone sales push consumers too hard, while supporters point out that the Postcode Association funds many vital charities in Sweden.

Therefore, the outcome will strongly affect how gambling organizations advertise in the future.

Wider Gambling Market Challenges

This case also reflects bigger changes in Sweden’s gambling market. In September, Spelinspektionen banned Bitx Operations and Ryker from targeting Swedish players. With this decision, the regulator showed a tougher approach to unlawful operators.

At the same time, channelisation remains a problem. Nearly 15% of Sweden’s gambling happens with unlicensed companies, especially in iGaming. Because of this, the Ministry of Finance is planning a new review, while industry voices continue to push for stronger parliamentary action.
