Evolution sued for patent infringement in Lightning games

Taiwanese gaming supplier Jumbo Technology has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Evolution, the live casino giant, over its popular Lightning-branded games. Jumbo claims these games use its patented “dynamic raised odds” feature without permission

The complaint, filed in the US District Court for Delaware on May 29, alleges Evolution wilfully infringed US Patent No. 9,646,459 granted in 2017. This patent covers a system that randomly generates enhanced odds in games like roulette, baccarat, and dice to increase player engagement by offering intermittent boosted payouts while maintaining operator profitability.

Jumbo, active in the Asian gaming market since 2000, says the patented system is used in Evolution’s Lightning Roulette, Red Door Roulette, Lightning Baccarat, and Lightning Dice. These games feature random multipliers that raise payout potential on selected bets

The Taiwanese company first alerted Evolution in June 2024 and offered to license the patent for a reasonable royalty. However, Evolution declined to negotiate and continued to offer the games in multiple US states, including Delaware and Pennsylvania. Jumbo describes Evolution’s actions as “wilful, deliberate, and intentional” infringement

Jumbo seeks damages, enhanced compensation for wilful infringement, and attorneys’ fees. The complaint also accuses Evolution of indirect infringement by encouraging licensed casinos to offer these games and promoting them at trade shows like G2E Las Vegas

This lawsuit adds to Evolution’s ongoing legal battles, including a separate dispute with Light & Wonder over roulette game patents.
