Premier League Clubs Keep Signing Gambling Sponsors Despite UK Government Scrutiny

5 min read readBy DiegoMarch 16, 2026

The Deals Are Still Happening

English Premier League football clubs are continuing to sign sponsorship agreements with gambling companies, even as the UK government maintains pressure on the industry to reform. According to reporting from Gambling Insider in March 2026, clubs are operating within current legal boundaries — but some of the deals involve operators that are not licensed in the UK.

This matters because unlicensed operators are not subject to the same responsible gambling requirements, advertising rules and player protection standards that UK Gambling Commission-licensed operators must follow.

Why It Is Still Legal

UK gambling sponsorship law focuses on whether the deal itself is legal — not whether the operator holds a UK licence. As long as the agreement complies with domestic contract and advertising law, clubs can proceed. Premier League rules do not currently prohibit partnerships with unlicensed gambling brands.

The UK government has been reviewing gambling advertising and sponsorship since the Gambling Act white paper process, which proposed voluntary shirt front advertising restrictions for top-flight clubs. However, progress has been incremental, and enforcement on sponsorship deals involving unlicensed operators has been limited.

What This Means for Players

For players, the practical issue is straightforward: if an operator advertises heavily through Premier League clubs but is not licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, it does not have to meet UK standards for player protection, dispute resolution or responsible gambling.

Players in the UK — and in other regulated markets — should always check that a casino or sportsbook holds a valid licence from their national regulator before depositing. A well-known brand name or a football sponsorship is not a substitute for a proper gambling licence.

Key things to verify before you sign up to any casino:

  • A valid licence from a recognised regulator (UK Gambling Commission, Malta Gaming Authority, Curacao, etc.)
  • A clearly displayed responsible gambling section with self-exclusion and deposit limit tools
  • An independently verified dispute resolution mechanism

All casinos listed on Casino Kousu are licensed and reviewed with player protection as a primary criterion.

The Bigger Picture

The tension between football's commercial interests and gambling regulation is not unique to the UK. Across Europe, regulators are tightening rules on gambling advertising in sports contexts — a trend that is likely to accelerate as more markets build out their formal iGaming regulatory frameworks.
