BGC Warns £60 Million Was Wagered Illegally During Cheltenham Festival

£60 Million Bet Illegally at Cheltenham

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has warned that an estimated £60 million in wagers were placed with unlicensed offshore operators during the 2026 Cheltenham Festival — one of the biggest horse racing events in the UK calendar.

The figure, cited in industry reporting in March 2026, illustrates a persistent challenge for the UK's regulated gambling market: even during marquee events with heavy licensed operator participation, a significant volume of betting flows to unlicensed platforms that do not meet UK player protection standards.

Why Players Should Care

Betting with an unlicensed operator — even one that accepts UK customers — carries risks that many players do not consider until something goes wrong. Unlicensed operators are not subject to UK Gambling Commission oversight, which means:

  • Winnings can be withheld with limited recourse
  • Responsible gambling tools may be absent or optional
  • There is no access to the Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme
  • Personal and financial data may not be held to UK data protection standards

During major racing events, some offshore sites advertise aggressively with enhanced odds and fewer restrictions on bet sizes. These can look attractive but come without the safeguards of a licensed site.

What the BGC Is Calling For

The BGC used the Cheltenham data to renew its calls for stronger enforcement against illegal operators and better consumer awareness of the risks of using unlicensed platforms. The industry body represents licensed operators in the UK and has consistently argued that the black market undermines both player protection and tax revenues.

How to Check a Site Is Licensed

Before placing a bet or depositing at any gambling site, verify the operator holds a valid UK Gambling Commission licence. You can do this directly on the UKGC website by entering the operator's name or licence number. A licence badge in the footer is not sufficient on its own — the link should take you to a live verification page.
