The New Jersey court gave Black Cube seven days to disclose the mystery client who commissioned a 2021 report against iGaming giant Evolution. That report accused Evolution of serving prohibited markets and instantly caused billions in stock value losses.

Evolution believes a rival hired Black Cube. This theory gained traction after regulators in New Jersey and Pennsylvania confirmed they found no evidence of wrongdoing. As a result, judges argued the report looked baseless, shifting the focus to who ordered the investigation.

Halloween Hearing Brings Delay

Even though the court sided with Evolution, the story did not end there. Black Cube successfully requested a temporary delay, with a critical hearing now set for October 31. On Halloween, the firm will try to dismiss the lawsuit under New Jersey’s anti-SLAPP laws. However, if the court rejects this attempt, Black Cube will have to turn over invoices, payment records, and the name of its client.

Judge John C. Porto explained that, with regulators closing their cases, there was little reason to believe Black Cube’s report had merit. Instead, the real issue appears to be if a competitor attempted to interfere with Evolution’s business.

Evolution vs Black Cube: The Battle Continues

This dispute has stretched on for nearly five years. Earlier rulings revealed Black Cube created the damaging report after a law firm fronting the allegations was forced to open its files. Although Black Cube later filed a 118-page affidavit with new allegations, Evolution dismissed this as a distraction.
