Japan has passed a new law to tighten restrictions on illegal online casinos, focusing on blocking access and stopping promotion through websites and social media. This law targets intermediary sites that direct users to unauthorized gambling platforms, even if those casinos operate legally overseas.
The government’s goal is to reduce the risks linked to illegal online gambling, such as addiction, financial harm, and organized crime. Police estimate that about 3 million people in Japan have used illegal online casinos, spending around ¥1.24 trillion (US$8.6 billion) annually. Despite these high numbers, only a few gambling activities like horse racing and lotteries are legally allowed in Japan.
The new legislation bans digital content that promotes or links to illegal gambling sites. It also gives authorities the power to demand the removal of such content to prevent people from accessing these platforms. This move follows scandals involving celebrities and athletes caught using offshore online casinos, which raised public concern and pushed lawmakers to act.
The law will come into effect three months after its official announcement, allowing time for enforcement preparations and public awareness campaigns. Officials hope these measures will discourage casual gambling, lower addiction rates, and stop illegal money flows through gambling.
