Meta Ordered to Remove Illegal Gambling Ads in Brazil

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has been ordered by Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office (AGU) to remove illegal gambling ads within 48 hours. The AGU found that hundreds of promotions for unauthorized gambling operators were active on Meta’s platforms. These operators have no licenses from Brazil’s Ministry of Finance, which is a legal requirement to advertise gambling services in the country.

What the Brazilian Attorney General’s Office Highlights About Illegal Ads

The AGU’s notice stressed that these illegal ads can be linked to serious crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, fraud, and consumer rights violations. According to Brazilian law, gambling websites must be licensed and use a “.bet.br” domain to be legal and authorized to promote their services.

Despite Meta’s recent promises to update their gambling ad policies and improve their verification processes, the AGU says the company still needs to do more to remove these ads promptly.

The Importance of the 48-Hour Deadline

A recent ruling from Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court says digital platforms like Facebook and Instagram are responsible for illegal content they host, especially paid ads. The AGU expects Meta to act diligently and remove non-compliant ads quickly. If Meta does not comply within the 48-hour timeframe, it could face stricter legal consequences.

Meta’s Global Efforts to Manage Gambling Ads

Meta has also faced similar challenges in other countries, such as India and the Philippines, where it has taken some steps like removing certain illegal gambling content and pages. However, the situation in Brazil is urgent, and the AGU is closely monitoring the company’s response.
