The Scottish Government, led by SNP ministers, supports a bill proposed by Green MSP Mark Ruskell that aims to ban all greyhound racing in Scotland. This bill would outlaw racing on greyhound tracks. The move follows serious concerns about the health and safety of racing dogs. Officials recognize “genuine risks” linked to current racing practices. Therefore, they want to act before the sport can return or grow again.

Bill Focuses on Animal Welfare

Greyhound racing puts dogs in danger. In 2023, 109 greyhounds died and over 4,200 got injured in the UK alone, mostly from collisions on tight oval tracks. Supporters argue that forcing dogs to race at high speeds around curves leads to these risks. They say no regulation has fully stopped the harm. Hence, the bill aims to protect dogs by ending this gambling-driven sport.

Government and Party Backing

The bill enjoys cross-party support, including 12 SNP and 6 Green MSPs. The Agriculture Minister confirmed government backing but plans to amend details like when the law takes effect and how it enforces rules. Since Scotland’s last active greyhound track recently paused, the ban would stop any restart of racing

Scotland follows Wales and New Zealand in banning greyhound racing. Animal welfare groups, like the Unbound the Greyhound coalition, praised the move as a major step toward ending a cruel sport. Meanwhile, the RSPCA noted that just nine countries still allow commercial greyhound racing, showing a worldwide shift toward stronger animal protection.
