GamCare has revealed its first evaluation of the GamCare Money Guidance initiative, showing positive effects on individuals facing gambling-related financial harm. The service is the first of its kind in the UK, offering gambling-specific money advice to support recovery and stability.
Launched in 2022 as a pilot in East Midlands and Yorkshire, it expanded nationwide in 2023. Now, anyone accessing GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline can also get one-to-one financial guidance.
Improving Lives with Debt Support
The evaluation, carried out by Dr. Xia Lin and Professor Alessio D’Angelo, shows clear improvements in financial health. Users of the service reported reduced debt, better budgeting, and more confidence in managing their money. One participant shared that the tools provided helped them feel more secure and less anxious about daily expenses.
Bridging the Gap Between Gambling and Debt
This initiative is the first national programme to fully connect gambling recovery with debt advice. GamCare highlighted that 76% of helpline callers cite money problems as a main issue. By offering tailored money guidance, the service ensures that more people can rebuild their finances while also receiving emotional support.
Training and Expert Guidance
Another positive outcome of the evaluation was the training provided to Helpline advisors. Staff can now better guide callers toward practical financial solutions while reinforcing recovery from gambling. The report reflects both professional improvements and stronger outcomes for callers.
