The DraftKings credit card ban begins on August 25 across the United States. Players will no longer be able to use credit cards to fund their sportsbook or casino accounts.
DraftKings says this change aims to protect customers from cash advance fees and heavy interest rates. Importantly, any saved credit cards will vanish from user accounts once the rule starts.
Still, players will have plenty of alternatives. Deposit options include debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, bank transfers, gift cards, wire transfers, and even cash at casino cages or retail shops.
Why the Ban Happened
This decision did not come out of nowhere. DraftKings faced a $450,000 fine from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission earlier this summer. That penalty, the largest in the state’s history, was linked to credit card deposits.
Investigators uncovered more than 1,160 unauthorized wagers from 200 customers. The bets totaled over $83,000. While DraftKings admitted some of these problems, regulators said the errors were due to internal missteps. As compliance rules tighten, the company is now moving quickly to avoid similar troubles.
Other States and Global Shift
Massachusetts is not the only state with restrictions. Iowa, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and Illinois already ban credit card gambling deposits.
And the movement is spreading. In Pennsylvania, lawmakers considered a similar rule, though it stalled. Outside the US, the United Kingdom banned such payments in 2020. More recently, Australia joined in 2024. Now, countries like Sweden are closer than ever to approving bans.
