BlueBet Fined for Allowing Player to Lose AU$570,000

Australian bookmaker BlueBet has been fined AU$53,380 after allowing a player to lose nearly AU$570,000 without taking enough harm minimisation steps. The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission (NTRWC) issued the fine after an investigation found BlueBet did not protect the player adequately despite clear warning signs.

The player deposited AU$700,000 over four months but still faced encouragement from BlueBet’s VIP manager to continue gambling, including offers of bonus bets. This conduct was seen as prioritising profit over player safety. The VIP manager even deposited bonus funds after the player said they could not deposit themselves, showing a failure in responsible gambling practices. This case highlights concerns about BlueBet’s commitment to safer gambling measures.

BlueBet has been licensed since 2021 and previously faced penalties for other breaches, including advertising violations. After the player reached out saying they wished they had been stopped earlier, BlueBet finally closed the account. However, the harm caused over months indicates missed opportunities for action.

The NTRWC called this behaviour “extremely concerning” and stated the operator’s response was insufficient to address binge gambling risks. The fine of AU$53,380 represents the maximum penalty under current regulations but is only a fraction of the player’s losses.
