FanDuel has agreed to pay the Jacksonville Jaguars $5 million following a shocking embezzlement scheme by Amit Patel, a former financial manager for the NFL team. This FanDuel Jaguars settlement was reached earlier this year to ease the team’s financial losses.

Patel admitted in 2023 to stealing $22 million through the Jaguars’ virtual credit card system. Of that, nearly $20 million was funneled into FanDuel bets, mostly in daily fantasy contests.

How the Fraud Went Undetected

Patel’s role overseeing department budgets allowed him to:

  • Duplicate or inflate charges for travel and catering
  • Fabricate fake but convincing transactions
  • Manipulate financial statements for over three years

The fraud only came to light in February 2023, when unusual activity in betting raised concerns.

Patel was sentenced to 6.5 years in federal prison before being moved to a Florida jail for an additional fraud trial that could carry up to 30 years.

  • The Jaguars sued Patel in 2024 for $66 million in damages.
  • Patel then filed a $250 million lawsuit against FanDuel, claiming the company failed to detect his suspicious activity.
  • FanDuel has denied wrongdoing and is seeking arbitration.

Impact on Sports Betting Industry

FanDuel, an official NFL partner, has not commented on the settlement. The Jaguars also declined to issue a statement. However, this case highlights:

  • The risks of internal fraud in pro sports organizations
  • The importance of responsible gambling safeguards in sportsbooks
  • Increasing legal scrutiny on betting operators
