In Indonesia’s Berau Regency, online gambling directly causes more divorces. H. Sumadi, Deputy Speaker of the Berau Regional People’s Representative Council, explained that most divorces happen due to issues linked to online betting platforms. Moreover, families face financial ruin and broken trust, which often result in separation. The local religious court reported 483 divorce cases this year — higher than last year’s total of 431 — showing a clear connection to online gambling.

Divorce Statistics and Financial Harm

According to data from the Tanjung Redeb Religious Court, women filed 372 of the 483 divorce cases, while men filed 111. Furthermore, Sumadi shared stories of families who sold their homes to pay gambling debts. Consequently, online gambling causes serious damage not only to finances but also to the community’s well-being in Berau.

Government and Political Responses to Gambling

The Indonesian government has acted strongly to stop online gambling. For example, President Prabowo Subianto called for better international cooperation and tougher laws. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication and Digital has removed over 2 million gambling-related online contents since late 2024. Also, politicians like Benny K. Harman support the crackdown and vow to punish offenders. Together, these efforts aim to protect families and reduce harm caused by gambling.

Conclusion and Call to Action

The rise in online gambling divorce cases in Indonesia demands urgent attention. Still, with government action and increased awareness, the situation can improve. This story reminds us all how unchecked gambling growth hurts real families and communities.
