Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs sounded the alarm on teenage gambling risks. A new survey shows many students still lack education about the dangers of betting. The research focused on secondary students aged 14 to 18.

The Spanish Observatory of Drugs and Addictions revealed that only 48.4% of students received information on gambling harms. In contrast, far more students learned about technology misuse (74%) and the risks of alcohol or drugs (72.3%). This gap clearly shows the urgent need for gambling awareness programs.

Students and Gambling Exposure

The data also confirms that nearly 20% of teenagers had gambled with money at least once. In-person gambling appeared more common than online play. Boys reported higher involvement, as 26.8% admitted to gambling compared to 12.6% of girls. Even more alarming, the average gambling start age stood at just 13.9 years.

These numbers highlight how quickly gambling reaches young people, long before adulthood. As such, stronger school-based awareness campaigns could help reduce early exposure.

High-Risk Behaviours Among Youth

The findings also revealed that 26% of students showed signs of being at risk of problem gambling. Slot machines, betting, and card games appeared as the riskiest activities. Although most students reported gambling only once a year and with little money (62.5%), experts warned that early gambling habits often grow into bigger problems later.

Because of these trends, officials now call for stronger rules and more direct education for teenagers. Schools and families will likely play a key role in prevention.
