Chinese Crime Boss ‘Broken Tooth’ Fuels Pig Butchering Scams

Chinese crime boss Wan Kuok-koi, known as “Broken Tooth,” plays a major role in pig butchering scams in Southeast Asia. These scams trick people into fake cryptocurrency investments. Scammers build fake trust through social media or dating apps. Then, they convince victims to send money to fake crypto sites.

Wan led the 14K Triad in Macau. He went to prison in 1999 but came back in 2012 as a businessman. He started the World Hongmen History and Culture Association. The US Treasury says this group hides criminal acts like money laundering and drug trafficking. Even after US sanctions in 2020, Wan stays active. He travels to Laos, Cambodia, and Macau. Videos show him linked to controversial groups.

Pig butchering scams work by “fattening” victims. Scammers gain trust with fake romance or business talks. Then, they push victims to invest large sums in fake crypto platforms. These scams have stolen billions worldwide. The US alone lost billions recently. The scams grew during the COVID-19 pandemic as more people used online platforms.

Wan also connects to the Dongmei Zone in Myanmar. This area is a hub for online scams and human trafficking. It has weak law enforcement and links to militia groups.

Countries like Thailand and Malaysia have tried to stop Wan. But his complex network and political ties make it hard. Wan stays public and uses business fronts. This helps pig butchering scams grow under his control.
